This year’s top D&AD Pencil award goes to Silent Shake, a typeface-led campaign designed to raise awareness about Parkinson’s Disease by showcasing the subtle changes in handwriting that often go unnoticed as early warning signs.
By using handwriting from individuals with Parkinson’s, Silent Shake seeks to promote early detection and bring much-needed attention to the world’s fastest-growing neurological disorder.
“For this brief, we wanted students to have the freedom to choose the moments of tension or oppression they wanted to address, allowing them to use their love of typography to make a statement. That mirrors what they’ll encounter in the real world when working on commercial projects.”
Sammi Vaughan, Partnerships, D&AD
“We quickly realized that this brief evoked strong emotions in the candidates and the jury. It seemed like a powerful wake-up call. The projects allowed participants to engage with sensitive topics and highlight personal issues as well. Working with matters of the heart and emotions is truly impactful! When addressing challenging or taboo subjects, we realize how these issues are universal and fundamental.”
Laurène Girbal, Type Designer, Monotype, Judge
“The Silent Shake project was brilliant in how it used type, even though it wasn’t an original typeface. It engaged people in a way that was observational and applicational. It wasn’t about creating something beautiful — it wasn’t meant to be. It used type in a way that drove awareness and behavior change, which made it incredibly clever. We all immediately agreed it was exceptional.”
