How might typography help bring about justice in the world?

Monotype is the 2025 typography sponsor for the D&AD New Blood Awards. Our brief asks students worldwide to create a visual response to the multifaceted role of typography, investigating how it sets the rules of social conduct and objects to governmental restrictions of freedom. As of this writing, the brief has been downloaded 6,836 times in 85 countries. In May 2025, we will announce the winning results via our social channels. Monotype looks forward to formally congratulating these creatives at the July awards celebration.

The act of voting shapes how our money is spent and how parties balance order, but when governments overreach on freedoms, dissent and protest arise. In 2024, typography has played a critical role in encoding laws, voicing elections, and influencing decisions as we unknowingly sign contracts. This project, in partnership with D&AD and thousands of students worldwide, explores whether the design of typefaces can shape our lives to create meaningful change in society.
