Monotype Marks a Year of Partnerships, Innovation, and Creativity in 2024
WOBURN, Mass., December 23rd, 2024 – Monotype Imaging Inc., a global leader in type design and technology, is marking a year of significant growth, new partnerships, and collaboration with the wider foundry and design community.
The company’s partner program brought an extensive range of high-quality type choices from the Monotype library to some of the world’s leading platforms. In 2024, design platforms Picsart and Kittl, invoicing platform Sufio, and instant payments platform Hopscotch joined Monotype’s existing partners, including Canva, Adobe, and more. These partnerships have made thousands of curated fonts from Monotype and their foundry partners available seamlessly for a combined audience of hundreds of millions of creative and professional users across Monotype’s partners’ platforms.
Monotype collaborated with partners to promote the power of design and type. With fellow design leaders from Pantone, Canva, and Getty Images, Monotype participated in a panel discussing the ingredients for building a modern brand at SXSW to a packed audience.
Monotype’s CEO Ninan Chacko spoke in a panel discussion with partner Kittl’s CEO at Web Summit on “Designing Tomorrow, the Role of Creative AI” and Monotype’s ECD Phil Garnham held a masterclass with Picsart on unlocking the power of typography in designing for business.
Monotype hosted its first Foundry Business Summit in Amsterdam for 45 foundry partners focused on helping foundries achieve growth and success with sessions on the strategies, knowledge, and tools suited for modern font licensing and distribution. As part of Monotype’s commitment to growing and fostering the design community, Monotype helped foster foundry success and growth in 2024, hostingMonotype hosted anits inaugural Foundry Business Summit in Amsterdam forwith 45 foundry partners., Fwith a focusing on helping foundries partners thrive, the summit offeringfeatured sessions that shared them vital typography industry knowledge and tools to help them succeed in the type industry. Monotype sponsored local type and design community events around the globe, including Typographics in New York, DiaTipo in São Paulo, ATypl in Brisbane, and Lestrástica in Guadalajara.
At Adobe Max 2024, Monotype brought a “universe of type” to its exhibition stand and presentations, and announced a new creative collaboration with iconic American notebook brand Field Notes. At Adobe MAX, Monotype also unveiled the latest stats on the growth of its Foundry Program. In the preceding twelve months, the Foundry Program grew by 60% to include 2,230 foundry partners who collectively launch more than 3,200 new typefaces on the platform every month.
Monotype advanced its support of research in the role of typography. Monotype joined The Readability Consortium, which brings together experts from a variety of fields to conduct scientific research on readability with actionable, practical results. Current partners include Google, Adobe, and the nonprofit Readability Matters, with over 200 stakeholders in the larger readability research community. Monotype also released preliminary results from its Global Font Use & Forecasting survey, conducted with research partner Censuswide, in which 4,777 creatives shared their views on the future of creative workflows, Artificial Intelligence, and the importance of type in design. The full report will be available in early 2025.
Notable additions to the Monotype Library in 2024 include libraries from the US-based Sharp Type foundry and from European foundries DSType and Kastelov, further expanding the Monotype Fonts library to more than 150,000 high-quality fonts.
Monotype also announced the acquisition of Extensis, a leading provider of font management solutions. By combining Monotype’s extensive font library with the best of both Monotype Fonts and Extensis Connect font management software, Monotype will create an all-in-one inventory and font software solution for customers that will enhance the user experience and value.
During 2024, Monotype’s headcount grew by 27% to over 1300 employees globally, with offices in Woburn, Berlin, London, Noida, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Paris, and Portland. The company also announced the appointment of its first Creative Type Director for the Indic market, Vaishnavi Murthy Yerkadithaya. With over 18 years of design and research experience, Vaishnavi’s expertise is helping enhance and diversify Monotype’s typographic offerings and services to better serve the dynamic and culturally rich Indic market and its over 1,500 languages and dialects.
It’s been a fantastic year of recognition for Monotype’s creative and design teams.
The Campaign US 2024 class of Inspiring Women recognized Sara Soskolne, Monotype creative type director, for “Rising to the Top.” Monotype’s AI-powered Font Pairing tool was recognized by Fast Company in the 2024 Innovation by Design Awards. The team behind Monotype’s Creative Characters podcast won a Gold W3 Award for General Series-Interview and Talk Show. Monotype Executive Creative Director Tom Foley, typographer Peter Horridge, and Edit brand studio were among those recognized for the National Portrait Gallery rebrand in the 2024 Creative Review Annual Awards. The 13th GRANSHAN Type Competition 2023/2024 awarded second prize in Multiscript type for Opel Next, as well as third prize for Dollop Serif for Greek type, and special mentions in South East Asian type for Aperçu Thai and in Multiscript type for Grenette.
